Overview

Visual Studio Code is a free source-code editor made by Microsoft. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is built on open-source foundations.

VS Code supports a very wide range of programming languages through extensions. Out of the box it provides syntax highlighting, code completion, an integrated terminal, a debugger and built-in Git source control. The extensions marketplace adds language support, linters, themes, remote development tools and AI coding assistants. Settings and extensions can be synced between computers.

Visual Studio Code is used by beginners writing their first scripts as well as professional teams working on large projects. It is lighter than a full integrated development environment, yet can be extended to cover most development tasks. Download it from code.visualstudio.com; it is a separate product from Microsoft’s Visual Studio IDE, which has different editions and licensing.
