Overview
GIMP, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a free and open-source raster graphics editor developed by volunteers. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is distributed under the GPL licence.
GIMP is used for photo retouching, image composition, creating graphics for the web and digital painting. It works with layers, layer masks, selections, paths and a large set of filters, and supports brushes and tablets for drawing. Many tasks can be automated or extended with scripts and plug-ins written by the community.
GIMP is a strong option for anyone who needs a capable desktop image editor without a subscription, from students learning image editing to small businesses preparing product photos. Its interface differs from commercial editors, so expect a short learning period; the official website provides documentation and tutorials. Download GIMP only from gimp.org, which lists the official installers for each operating system.
